A Short History

The Sandwich Historical Society was formed early in 1965 by a group of like minded individuals that recognized the important impact that Sandwich and it’s industries had on the community, the area, and in some instances, the world. The first meeting was held at the Sandwich Library on March 11, 1965 and the following board members and founders were in attendance: Tom Davis, James Knights, John Silver, Louis Brady, Lewis Rex, James T. Nelson, and David Graf. A discussion concerning the type of exhibits to be included in the museum transpired and it seemed to be the unanimous opinion that the community’s industrial inventions would be acceptable. Later that year, James Knights deeded the Stone Mill to the society with the stipulation that it was to be used as the Sandwich Historical Society Industrial Museum. The original purpose of the museum was to display actual farm machinery and other industrial products manufactured in Sandwich that played a major part in the growth of the area in the early days.
